Raresh – Romania’s Secret Weapon

by Marc

When you are thinking of the founders of the Romanian Electronic Music scene, probably the first name that comes to your mind is [a:rpia:r], composed by the well-known trio Rhadoo, Petre Inspirescu and Raresh. The latter is the youngest of them, but the most beloved of Romanian DJ-s, as he grinded his way to the top by playing the best tracks he could find, while also being an unlimited source of energy for the crowds.

Rares Ionut Iliescu, a.k.a Raresh, was born on the 13th of August 1984 and made his musical debut at a very young age, when he was only 15. The year of 2000 was the beginning of his musical career, when he was playing different types of music during weekend afternoon parties in a small club in Bacău, his hometown. One year later, he got the opportunity to show off his Detroit and Chicago house tracks at the Zebra Club, the only place in town where all night long house-music parties were held. There he was astonished to find two turntables on which he also learned how to mix. This being the moment when his passion for records was born. He was buying records online, from stores such as Juno, carefully selecting only what he considered to be “essential to have”.

He became a resident at Zebra where he also met Rhadoo, who introduced him to the people behind the event series branded as “The Mission” where he played along international artists for a while. In 2005, his residency ended and he moved to Bucharest for his studies in Chemical Engineering yet often returning to Bacău to play at the weekends despite the long distance between the two cities.

Things started to get more serious for Raresh as he had already played besides well-known DJ-s such as Margaret Dygas, Richie Hawtin and Magda and obtained multiple residencies in Mamaia, the birthplace of the Sunwaves Festival. However, this was just the beginning for what was to come for him: in 2006, he got the chance to warm-up for Ricardo Villalobos in Bucharest at Studio Martin - a party that changed his life. They played together at the afterparty of the event and got along so well that they have became close friends since then. Raresh decided to quit University and completely focus on his musical career, a decision he does not regret at all.

Also in 2006, with the help of Rhadoo and Petre Inspirescu, [a:rpia:r] came to life, thus building up the foundation of the renowned “Romanian Sound”. Since then, Raresh continued to play at parties all around the globe without losing his passion for music, seeking new sounds and striving to become better. His next stop is at Sunwaves on the 1st of May, so be ready for some serious stuff coming, as he never disappoints.
